Glass International July/August 2014

Welcome to the combined July/August issue of Glass International.

This month Jerry Lemieux, CEO of Bennu Glass, the new player in the US container glass market, talks to Glass International about the challenges involved in getting the company up and running, and how the company plans to pit itself against the established wine and beer bottle producers in the US market.

Speaking of which, we also take a look at O-I’s recently opened Innovation Center in Ohio, and speak with Ludovic Valette, Global Vice President of R&D, about the technology and equipment used at the centre and the results produced so far.

Prof. Russell Hand, recently appointed President of the Society of Glass Technology in the UK, talks to Glass International about the group’s upcoming centenary and its plans for the future, and Colombian company Thor discusses its recent entry into the glass industry, as an addition to its high-precision manufacturing work in the Defence and Aeronautical sectors.

This month our technical focus is on handling, and we have features from Grenzebach on inspecting thin glass, and Heye on quad gob ware handling, as well as features on safety wear and dry lubrication – a technical solution for unstable packages.

On top of all this we have our usual round up of the latest industry news and events, including a review of this year’s Mir Stekla. This is accompanied by our regular Technical Topics and History columns, as well as contributions from British Glass and Abividro.
