African container glass manufacturer Consol has announced its intention to build a new plant in Nigel, South Africa, boosting its annual output by 25%.
The factory, in which Consol will invest a reported ZAR 1.9 billion, will increase the group’s annual production by 220,000 tons to reach more than one million tons, or more than four billion glass containers. It is thought that the increased capacity will meet market growth expectations.

The planned factory will house two furnaces; each with an output of 400 tons per day. Construction will take place in two phases: Infrastructure development, production service equipment and the first furnace will be commissioned by September 2011 at a cost of ZAR 1.3 billion; while the second phase will depend upon market growth and demand and will cost a further ZAR 600 million.
