Owens-Illinois (O-I) has announced the launch of its lightest ever North American wine bottle, which, it reports, is up to 27% lighter than similar bottles at 11.6oz.

The container glass manufacturer is also launching a 13oz 750ml claret bottle, to be available to customers on the east coast of the USA.
The new line of lightweight claret and burgundy bottles is part of O-I’s Lean+Green initiative to create strong and durable but lighter bottles using advanced manufacturing techniques.
“O-I developed its lighter wine bottles to meet the same strict quality standards of our traditional wine bottles,” said Stan Gossett, Vice President and Category Director for North America Wine. “We are proud to offer additional lightweight packaging options that help customers realize higher environmental savings, while retaining the strength and premium image for which O-I packaging is known,” he added.
The new line of lightweight bottles follows O-I’s recently announced plans to cut energy use and carbon emissions while increasing its use of recycled content.
The company revealed that by 2017, it intends to: Cut its global energy consumption by 50%; reduce carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions by 65%; nearly double use of recycled glass so that a global average of 60% of each O-I container is recycled material; and eliminate workplace accidents.
