Glassmaker Schott is planning to build a plant for the production of glass packaging for the pharmaceutical industry in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, according to reports.

The manufacturer of high-quality industrial glass products believes that by the time the plant is commissioned, the consequences of the crisis for the Russian and EU market of pharmaceutical glass will
be overcome.

In this respect, the launch of the plant is expected to allow the company to begin a large-scale expansion of its Russian market, where the majority of the proposed plant’s production will
be sold.

According to sources close to the project, the investment in the first stage of the plant is estimated at approximately 750 million rubles ($25 million), while the total value of investments in the project may reach 2.2 billion rubles ($75 million).

Sergei Mokhonko, Director General of Schott Russia, said that in its initial stages, the plant’s production volumes are expected to reach up to 350 million glass bulbs and 250 million bottles annually.

During the second stage of the project, the company plans to significantly expand its range through the production of syringes, cartridges and other products, according to Mr Mokhonko.

In addition, Schott will later consider launching the production of glass tubes for medical glass bottles.
