October 2019

Welcome to the October 2019 issue of Glass International.

We have article from Gallo Glass and how it is embracing the latest digital technology.

We also have the second article from former Coca-Cola and SAB Miller executives Emma Bowers and Richard van Breda about how the glass industry should take the lead in enhancing brand equity.

George Lewis speaks to Michel Ben Simon of Phoenicia Glass, who explains how it competes as the only container glass manufacturer in Israel.

The Glassman event in Lyon, France took place in September and we have a comprehensive roundup of the show, including a speech from Nicolas Lelorrain of O-I, who provided an update on its plans for the Gironcourt plant in France.

We also look ahead to Glass Focus 2019, organised by British Glass in Sheffield, England in November.

The Lucy Oldfield award was won by Jessica Rigby for her work on nuclear research at the recent SGT Annual Conference in Cambridge. We speak to her and also hear from the outgoing President of the SGT, Bill Brookes as he gives his farewell speech after three years in the role.

Next up with have an article from BDF Industries on how it electronically updates or replaces its control systems.

We also review the recent IHS World Soda Ash Conference in Cannes, France, where it was shown that demand from the glass industry benefits soda ash production.

The container glass sector continues to grow in the Philippines and we look at how it is moving from an economy based on agriculture to one based more on manufacturing and services

And Prof John Parker rounds the issue off by discussing Frederick Carder, the founder and designer at Steuben Glassworks.
