Speciality glass maker Corning has signed a multi-billion dollar deal with Amazon to boost US production of optical fibers.

The optical fibers and connectivity products are are crucial to move move data between thousands of processors ​in AI data centres.

The multi-year ​partnership will create 1,000 jobs at Corning's ​North Carolina facilities, Amazon said.

The two companies will also work together ‌on ⁠a new initiative that will expand Corning's fiber optic technician training programme with the Catawba Valley Community College in North Carolina to train students for ​roles in ​the facilities.

Wendell Weeks, chairman, CEO, and president of Corning, said: "For 175 years, Corning has pioneered the technologies that connect people and transform industries. Amazon's investment will help us expand production, create 1,000 new advanced manufacturing jobs at our facilities, and lead the way toward building a resilient US manufacturing base."
