Indian container glass manufacturer Hindusthan National Glass & Industries (HNG) has reported a fire at its Sinnar plant in Nashik, Maharashtra.
The fire severely damaged property and has caused a temporary disruption to production. No one was injured in the blaze.
In a statement the glassmaker said: “Adequate steps are being undertaken to restore the operations of the plant. The company is in the process to ascertain the actual quantum of loss caused by the fire.
“Further, there is adequate insurance coverage for the said plant and intimation to insurance company has already been made.”
It said the fire occurred on December 29 at around 7.50 pm IST.
However workers were critical of the company, saying a delay in the implementation of a safety plan had increased the risk to workers and supply chains, with recent fires stemming from overdue repairs to glass furnaces.
An HNG glass worker said: "Previous incidents, including a fire in Rishra near Kolkata in 2022 and another in Naidupeta, Andhra Pradesh, in mid-2023, underscore the urgency.
"The event in Nashik further exacerbates the severity of the situation. The severity of the situation is compounded by the fact that when furnaces leak, the supporting steel structures are at risk of melting, leading to a potential collapse of the entire unit."
A video of the Nashik fire was made available by workers, available to view below.
