The Glass Packaging Forum has released its latest data showing that glass recovery as a percentage of consumption has reached 69% in New Zealand for the first time.
John Webber, General Manager of the Forum said that this is a significant milestone: "Last year New Zealanders used 243122 tonnes of glass containers equivalent to around 947 million bottles or jars. 69% or around 653 million glass containers was diverted from landfill either to be made into new glass containers or used in other applications in New Zealand. This means we are comparable with the average glass recycling rate across the European Union which has now reached 70% and we are doing better than the UK (60%) and Australia (52%). In fact we are not far short of glass recycling rates held up by many as world class that have been achieved under heavily regulated systems."
