German pharmaceutical glass manufacturer Schott is to build a production site located south of Shanghai, China.

The facility, to be built at the Schott Xinkang site in Jinyun, will open in 2017 and make glass packaging for injectable drugs including vials and ampoules.

It also plans to modernise and expand its integrated site in Suzhou, China.

The company’s Pharmaceutical Systems division will invest €30 million ($32.7 million) in total in China over the next three years.

The measures will increase the company’s production capacity by 50% over the same period.

The company has already laid the cornerstone for the Jinyun pharmaceutical packaging plant.

The company said the move was in response to the strong growth of the Chinese pharmaceutical market.
