Glass melting and conditioning specialist Nikolaus Sorg & Co has announced that it is to enter the float glass sector, having signed a collaborative agreement to supply float furnace technology on the open market.

The agreement was recently signed between Sorg and the companies involved in the design, construction and operation of one of Europe's most modern float installations, which was commissioned in the summer of 2009. Sorg is now able to offer this float glass furnace technology on the open market.

In a statement, Sorg says its partner in the agreement (which as yet remains unnamed) has 'detailed know-how and practical knowledge of float plant design and operation', while Sorg itself brings to the collaboration its experience of all types of continuous melter - cross-fired, end-fired, regenerative, recuperative, fossil fuel, oxy-fuel and all-electric - combined with its familiarity with a range of glasses.

The furnace technology on offer through this collaboration has been used to produce both architectural and solar glass over the course of a single campaign with a glass change on the run. It also offers, Sorg claims, low energy consumption and emission levels in comparison with other float furnace designs.

The technology is now available through Sorg, which provides practical support for all phases of operation alongside its partner.
