The Central American Glass Group (Vical), which operates the Vicesa company, will close a furnace and make 240 staff redundant.

It said it would close a furnace at San Nicolás plant, Cartago in Costa Rica in response to the global decrease in demand for glass and problems with the supply of raw material.

With this action, Vicesa will reduce its operations to three furnaces, two in Guatemala and one in Costa Rica.

The company has plans to incorporate an electric furnace, which is expected to be operational at the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027.
