Strategic Materials has launched a programme to increase glass recycling in the Atlanta metro area, with manufacturers such as O-I and Anchor Glass set to benefit.
Nearly 20 glass recycling bins have been placed throughout Dekalb County in Georgia, USA, as the result of a programme launch between Strategic Meterials and the Dekalb County Sanitation Division.
Residents can drop-off their glass recyclables in large, industrial-sized collection containers.
Strategic Materials has launched similar programmes around the United States with varying partnerships to ensure glass is diverted from landfills.
Glass is crushed, sorted and primarily recycled back into glass container manufacturing and fiberglass insulation, resulting in a reduction of energy costs, and savings on virgin materials during production.
Georgia in particular will benefit from an increase in glass recycling - recycled glass is used by glassmaking facilities such as Owens-Illinois (O-I) in Atlanta; Anchor Glass in Warner Robins; Owens Corning in Fairburn; Johns Manville in Winder; and CertainTeed in Athens.
It results in local job creation and support and keeps recycled glass in local markets, reducing the transportation footprint.
“The public wants to recycle, it’s the right to do, and there are markets for the product, which supports jobs. I applaud the county for its leadership in this area to drive glass recycling forward, and we are happy to be a part of it,” said Curt Bucey, Executive Vice President for Strategic Materials.
Strategic Materials is the largest glass recycler in North America and has more than a 100-year history.
