Siemens discussed the benefits of digitalisation in the glass industry at the recent GPD conference in Finland.

Bernhard Saftig, head of the vertical glass business at Siemens, told the Tampere, Finland conference that digitalised solutions along the entire value chain allow glass plant operators and equipment suppliers to be faster, and more efficient and flexible.

He said: “Digitalisation will change the face of the glass industry as much as electrification and automation did in earlier times. The result will be huge leaps forward in productivity.

“Take the first step and start with a small, easy-to-follow data analysis and then review the benefits. After all, there’s no manual for digitalisation: it requires daring players among plant operators and equipment suppliers who are prepared to test things at a small level and then build step by step to larger tasks.”

The Glass Performance Days Conference (GPD) celebrated its 25-year anniversary on June 28-30, 2017, in Tampere, Finland.

Siemens will provide a keynote presentation about digitalisation in the glass industry at the forthcoming Glassman Europe conference in Lyon, France, which takes place on September 6 and 7.

The company's Pascal Huguet will provide a 30-minute paper on Wednesday, September 6 at 10.15am. The conference is free to attend.
