Nampak Wiegand Glass, a partnership between Africa’s largest packaging company, Nampak, and Germany glass manufacturer Wiegand Glas, has recently completed a new glass recycling facility at its Roodekop site in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The facility – a waste glass processing plant – accommodates state-of-the-art technology and equipment from Austrian supplier Binder + Co and is intended to meet Nampak Wiegand Glass’ processing and supply needs in the future.
Using a high-resolution camera system, which is able to recognise a wide colour spectrum, the new plant will separate waste glass shards according to colour, thus speeding up the process when compared to manual colour sorting.
Furthermore, the plant will separate the waste glass from other materials as well as clean the sorted waste glass and deliver material that is ready for use in the manufacture of new glass products.
Nampak Wiegand Glass is reported to have invested R160 million in the plant, which will see the company meet its commitment to increasing glass recycling rates in South Africa.
