AFGM Chairman Jonathan Aquino provided a welcoming speech at this year’s ASEAN glass conference.

He told delegates at the 47th AFGM in Cebu, the Philippines, this week that the conference theme of Shaping Sustainable Solutions in Glass Manufacturing was more relevant than ever.

Mr Aquino, who is also Chairman of the Glass Manufacturers' Association of the Philippines (GMAPI) said glass is already a sustainable material, is infinitely recyclable and essential for almost everything which was safe, from food packaging, ‘green’ buildings and has increased use in solar energy application.

But he warned the industry faces pressure to reduce its environmental impact in terms of how it manages its energy. It is also facing up the pressure of doing business, an increased cost structure as well as the threat from competitors materials.

He believes collaboration was key to move the industry forward and overcome those pressures.

Mr Aquino answers questions from conference host Dr Gabriella Mai Carballo.

“The question is how do we do more together? We have almost everything we need, we have experience, we have talented people, we have he technology - AI has been growing and progressing in glass manufacturing - and we have a shared commitment to progress.”

He suggested the industry needed to break down silos, particularly in terms of companies, countries, and complications.

“It is about collaboration where sustainability is at the very core.

"It is my great hope that we can influence growing the glass industry market together, whether it is joint R&D, regional circular economy strategies, or aligning on best greener manufacturing practices, I believe our impact will be greater if we move as a united industry.”

The conference had earlier started with the traditional shaking of hands among the executives of the four AFGM member companies.

Approximately 370 delegates also heard from conference Chairman, Anthony San Mateo, as well as a keynote from economist Mr Emilio S. Neri Jr and the Guest of Honour, the local Mayor, Cynthia King-Chan.

The conference continues on Wednesday with a technical session and then concludes Thursday.
