A paper which focused on reducing Scope 3 emissions from the glass manufacturing process secured an inaugural best presentation award.

The Murano Glass Flame winner was presented to Pete Nisbet from Edenseven sustainability consultancy.

He was among 14 speakers at last week’s Sustainability Session which took place at the Society of Glass Technology’s Annual Conference in Cambridge, UK.

The sustainability session was the brain child of current SGT President Arun Varshneya and former president, Stuart Hakes of FIC UK.

This year’s conference was organised by Steve Whettingsteel, CEO of Krysteline Technologies who, alongside colleagues Katrina Day and Keeley McConnell, also judged the award.

Although not from the glass industry, Pete was chosen as winner as the judges felt he had a great understanding and passion for his topic of presentation, and had researched the glass industry to ensure it was relevant to the audience.

In addition he also referenced papers which had been given earlier in the conference, his presentation style was clear and easy to understand and his paper was knowledge focused rather than a commercial pitch.

Honourable mentions were also given to presenters Jonathan Warby from UBH, Tyra Oseng-Rees from Oseng-Rees Reflection both of which were engaging presentations and showed great passion and knowledge, and Merve Akdemir from Şişecam for stepping up at the last minute to give a presentation after the original presenter had to cancel.

Other papers given were from flat glass manufacturer AGC, glass technology suppliers Sefpro and Picvisa, glass consultants Arup and UBH, the UK’s Glass Technology Services (GTS) and papers from academia including Leeds University, Alfred University and TU Illemnau.
