Fragrance and cosmetics glass packager Bormioli Luigi is rolling out technology from Iris Inspection Machines at its plants in Italy and Spain.
The rollout follows a trial of Iris Evolution NEO camera-based inspection machines at the firm’s Parma plant during which detected 100% of defects in the Bormioli Luigi samples.
The technology also registered a reduction in false rejections to improve production efficiencies.
As a result, Bormioli Luigi ordered sidewall and finish and base inspection machines for lines at Parma and its newly refurbished cosmetics furnace at the Azuqueca plant in Madrid.
Armando Brusamolino, Area sales manager at Iris Inspection Machines, said: “The challenge at Azuqueca was particularly intense as our machines would have to inspect not just extra flint glass but also a variety of coloured glass campaigns on the same line.
“Our Evolution NEO machines feature technology which is fully compliant with colour change.”
The French company proposed a new inspection line to detect standard and cosmetic (transparent) defects in the sidewall, finish and base, which performed efficiently in both extra flint and coloured glass.
The initial line has proved so successful that Bormioli Luigi decided to equip all lines on its renewed furnace with the same technology. The project will be completed early in 2023.
The installations comprise two complementary sets of equipment:
- Evolution Ultimate NEO is a sidewall inspection machine with up to 18 cameras. It is designed for the perfume and cosmetic market and detects a variety of defects such as stones, spikes, hard blisters, soft blisters, cold moulds, loading marks, heights, leaners etc.)
- Evolution 5 NEO is a fully automated machine for base and finish inspection and mould number reading. It can be fitted with up to five modules to suit each customer’s needs
Armando Brusamolino said: “It’s unusual for a perfume packaging line to have base and finish inspection because most cannot deal with the complex container shapes. The Evolution 5 NEO is so modular and flexible that it can easily be adapted to the varied job change needs of such lines.”
The Evolution Ultimate is dedicated to the cosmetics and perfume sector. It features specialised technology to identify surface defects, ideal for the cosmetics industry in which visual quality demands exceed those of other sectors.
Bormioli Luigi develops and manufactures premium packaging solutions for cosmetics, skincare and fragrance.
