The Duralex glass manufacturing facility in in La Chapelle-Saint- Mesmin, France has earnt a short reprieve.

The troubled glass plant has secured an extension of the period in which an offer can be made to take it over.

Potential buyers now have until July 17 to submit an offer for the iconic French glassmaker which employs 227 people at the site

The deadline was extended by three weeks after a decision by the Orléans commercial court last week.

Activists from the local union met in front of the court before the hearing.

One, named in local media as Daniel Calzada who worked for the company for 37 years, was quoted as saying: “You need a serious industrialist, who invests in production tools, hires, and invests in a real sales department to develop sales at home.”

In a message to staff in April it said it was requesting the opening of a ‘judicial recovery procedure’ with the local commercial court in Orleans to find a buyer for its parent company New Duralex International (NDI).

“Management had no other choice but to make this decision in order to preserve the interests of the company,” said NDI.

The glass facility blamed increased energy prices for a five and a half month closure between November 2022 and April 2023. It resumed production in April 17, 2023 after a €15 million state loan.
