EME has completed two projects at Gerresheimer’s Lohr, Germany glass facility.

The glass manufacturer's Furnace One capacity, which is used to produce flint glass, was to be increased.

EME was awarded the contract to make the necessary changes to the batch plant and batch transport system.

For the first part of the order, a mixer, a scale system for internal and external cullet addition and an upgrade of the cullet transport system were installed.

EME also upgraded the batch transport system to the furnace and updated the electrical control system with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) technology.

The second order included the modernisation of the cullet return system and a new concept including redundancy between the two cullet return systems.

This project involved the installation of four single fork link chain scrapers with gob chutes and three crusher systems with bypass technology, which were customised to the plant’s needs.

EME also made modifications to the cullet transport system and the electrical control system.

Work on both orders began at the start of 2025 and were completed on a turnkey basis.

Thorsten Christ, Sales Manager at EME, said: "We were delighted to receive these two follow-up orders, which demonstrate Gerresheimer Lohr's high level of satisfaction with our products and service.

“The projects were time-critical and the space available to carry out the work was limited, but we were able to fulfil our customer's expectations to their complete satisfaction.”

These two orders followed a successful installation and commissioning project carried out by EME for Gerresheimer Lohr (pictured below) in 2020 and 2021.

The capacity at the site furnace 2, which produces amber glass, was increased. Consequently, the existing batch plant was unable to supply enough batch to meet the new demands of the furnace.

To solve the problem and reduce the cycle time of the batch plant, EME made modifications and upgrades to equipment, including the:

  • Sand charging and weighing system
  • Cullet charging system
  • Soda dosing system
  • Mixer system
  • Cullet dosing unit
  • Batch transport system

Christ said: “This turnkey project was challenging, because of a tight schedule and limited space in the batch plant, but we were thrilled with the result.

“More importantly, the team at Gerresheimer Lohr were delighted too, which led to us receiving these two further orders from the company.”
