Alessandro Monteforte and Professor Paul Bingham received the best paper award at the Furnace Solutions glass event in the UK.

After a close result, the judges decided that the speakers would share the Michael Garvey award.

Mr Monteforte, CEO of Padova, Italy, headquartered K2-CO2, spoke about CO2 capture systems with Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) applied to glass furnaces.

Meanwhile Prof Bingham, of Sheffield Hallam University, discussed making commercial glass compositions and raw materials more sustainable.

Prof Bingham was available to accept his award at the conference, but Mr Monteforte had to leave early to catch a flight so will receive his award separately.

Furnace Solutions was organised by the Society of Glass Technology and took place in St Helens, UK, this week.

The two-day conference included a tour of the adjacent Glass Futures facility as well as papers from a variety of industry experts.

A total of 118 people attended the conference.

Kevin Rivers, the SGT's Melting Technical Committee chairman, said he was overall pleased with the conference, which ran smoothly.

“We had a good selection of speakers, which included three glass manufacturers and a speaker from academia amongst others, and we are very pleased with the quality of all papers.

“The theme of the conference was sustainability because this is the main focus currently, but I believe we attained a balance by including other subjects.”

Nick Kirk of British Glass spoke about pEPR in more detail, enabling all to see glass is getting a rough deal in comparison to plastics and aluminium packaging.

Mr Rivers said: “It is a case of continuing to lobby the government to consider quantity of items rather than weight which is a fairer solution.”
