PPG Industries’ glass fibre business staff scientist Hong Li has been inducted as a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS).

Li holds 20 patents and before joining PPG in 2000, his research in nepheline discrimination at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory led to the current standard composition formulation benchmark used for vitrification of high-level nuclear waste at the US Department of Energy’s Savannah River and Hanford sites. It is known in the field of nuclear waste as the ‘Li Criterion’.

Li is a technical referee for journals and has served as chair of the Glass and Optical Materials Division of ACerS as well as on many glass science and technology award committees. Li is also a council member of the International Commission on Glass.

“To be named an ACerS Fellow is one of the highest honors in my field,” Li said. “I am honoured to be able work in a field that provides me the opportunity to have such a huge impact on people’s lives.”
