According to reports, Corning’s Gorilla Glass is not expected to reach its $800 million sales target for 2011 and the company will cut back on production of the specialty glass.

“We had the capacity to produce $800 million worth of Gorilla Glass, but we don’t have the demand,” said James Flaws, Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer.

Demand for the glass that dominates the smartphone market has lagged as Corning tried to find an opening for it in the television market, where much larger glass sizes predominate. Despite this, Corning remains confident about the product’s future.
