MAGMA glass manufacturing technology is not a silver bullet, said O-I’s CEO.

Gordon Hardie spoke about the potential of the new technology but warned it will not solve all the company’s challenges.

He told analysts at a Capital Markets presentation in early December the core technology of MAGMA works and is in the process of scaling up production at its first greenfield facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA.

But Mr Hardie said MAGMA is just one of the tools in O-I’s transformation plan, alongside other initiatives such as the Fit to Win programme.

He added that MAGMA, like any other technology, must prove its worth by delivering economic profit to be considered a success.

MAGMA was first unveiled in 2021 by O-I and at the time was hailed as capable of ‘re-imagining the container glass manufacturing process.’
