O-I successfully validated several technology milestones for its MAGMA Generation one line at its Holzminden, Germany glass manufacturing facility in the past quarter.
CEO Andres Lopez gave on update on the new glass production technology during the company’s latest financial report.
He said MAGMA will melting technology will be capable of using biofuels and other carbon neutral renewable sources of energy, like hydrogen, as well as more grades of recycled glass.
He added the company also remains on track to pilot the Generation two MAGMA line in its Streator, Illinois, facility and is making solid progress developing its Generation three technology.
“Additionally, we're actively working on a R&D lightweighting programme we call Ultra, targeting significant container weight reductions to improve even further the convenience and sustainability profile of glass.”
Ultra will use cleaner gas oxygen fuels and improved technology in traditional furnaces.
