O-I Glass is to close it Bernsdorf glass manufacturing site, in Saxony, Germany.
It will lead to the loss of 100 jobs. Production at the site had been suspended in September
Bernsdorf Mayor Harry Habel expressed disappointment, citing the short transport routes to the main customer, Jägermeister in Kamenz, which will now be stopped.
"The closure is difficult to understand from both an economic and ecological perspective. Long transport routes increase production costs and harm the environment."
He added that the announcement had hit the glass employees hard.
"The mood is tense and marked by great uncertainty. Many employees feel disappointed after years of loyalty and hard work."
O-I has previously cited difficult market conditions and strong competition in the glass industry as reasons for several glass plant closures in its portfolio.
The Bernsdorf site had celebrated its 150th anniversary in May 2022.
