O-I's Toano, Virginia, USA facility has become a model for the rest of the company’s industrial glass facilities after it achieved impressive production results.

The facility was selected as a pilot site for O-I's Total Organization Effectiveness (TOE) programme as it was a good representation of the company’s portfolio, Eduardo Restrepo, Senior Vice President, Business Operations Americas, said.

After a 20-week trial period the facility achieved a 10% improvement in productivity.

“We're three quarters of the way in at this moment in time and the results are just simply impressive, this is from someone like me who has lived in the glass industry for the past 20 years.

“This transformation is happening without the need for capital investment or disrupting our supply chain—showcasing the effectiveness of our approach.”

He said by the end of 2026, O-I expects to roll out its TOE programme fully across its operations, to further drive efficiency and profitability.

The TOE programme is focused on elevating productivity and releasing trapped capacity within its operations.

“By driving greater efficiency, we can reduce fixed costs and improve performance,” Mr Restrepo said.

It is anticipated that TOE will free up to 10-15% of trapped capacity for higher profit volumes and which can then be used to support further network optimisation.
