Australian glass manufacturer Orora will make environmental gains thanks to a partnership with Origin Energy.

The two companies have partnered to launch the first large-scale facility initiative through the South Australian Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS).

Orora will implement two energy-efficient projects, including accessing more recycled glass for use in the glass bottles the company manufactures, and constructing a more energy-efficient furnace for glass production at its Gawler facility in South Australia.

Origin will purchase the REPS certificates generated by these activities to meet its liability under the REPS scheme, which supports the investment in these projects.

REPS is a South Australian government initiative that supports households and businesses in reducing their energy costs while also maximising the benefits to the power system to deliver a smarter, more affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy future for all South Australians.

Orora has goals of achieving 60% recycled content in the glass bottles it manufactures by 2025, as well achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions (for Scope 1 and 2) by 2050, with an interim goal of achieving 40% reduction by 2035.

The new furnace will contribute to the achievement of these goals through reducing gas consumption by injecting oxygen, in turn reducing furnace CO2 emissions by 20%, moving the furnace into the top 10% of energy-efficient furnaces in the world.

By increasing the use of recycled materials, Orora will help reduce the amount of glass entering the waste stream and decrease consumption rates of virgin materials such as sand, limestone, and soda ash.

It is expected these initiatives will provide broader economic benefits for South Australia, including attracting glass for recycling from other states.

Greg Savage, general manager at Orora Beverage Glass, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be the first large-scale manufacturer in SA to initiate projects under the REPS.

"This will enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions at our facilities, in turn helping us achieve our sustainability goals, and benefiting the wider community.”
