PPG Industries is to install the first Automated Tri-Lite Assembly System (Atlas) production line for insulating glass (IG) in the USA.

The new production line will be installed at its Residential IG Service Center in Carlisle, Pa, which manufactures IG units for use in residential windows and patio doors.

As a full-service fabrication facility, the PPG Residential IG Service Center supplements the production capabilities of residential window and patio door manufacturers.

The Atlas system means the plant can help meet high-volume demand for insulating, triple-pane IG units. It also makes conventional IG units as well as IG units in irregular shapes, sizes and configurations.

It means PPG can produce triple-pane IG units at a faster rate than it could using a traditional IG production line.

The Atlas production line is part of a project initially sponsored by the US Department of Energy to help window manufacturers produce triple-pane IG units more affordably and without reconfiguring existing production lines.
