Saverglass is set to close a manufacturing furnace in France.
The French-headquartered glassmaker said the closure at its Tourres & Cie facility in Le Havre, Normandy is expected to lead to 139 job cuts - almost a quarter of the site's workforce.
The site has two furnaces, with one oven to be closed.
For the past 10 months, the 480 employees have been on alternating short-time working.
Saverglass, which manufacturers high-end glass bottles for the spirits and wine industries, said 'a reorganisation project for the Tourres & Cie factory in Le Havre has been submitted to the social partners.'
"The consultation will focus on possible operational adjustments as well as the permanent shutdown of one of the factory's two furnaces."
£After deploying all available resources over the past 18 months to maintain operations and safeguard jobs, the situation is such that the company must adapt its production capacity to market demand and thus be able to invest in the development necessary for its future."
It blamed the deterioration of the markets affecting the global glass packaging sector and particularly in Europe.
It said: "The company must face the profound changes in consumption patterns that impact wines and spirits and the implementation of customs barriers on these products."
It said it must strengthen its performance over the long term and meet new environmental expectations while facing a situation of significant overcapacity.
The reorganisation project would help facilitate the implementation of the company's decarbonisation plan, which would begin with the modernisation of the furnace still in operation, it added.
