SGD Pharma has obtained certification for its post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass packaging at its plant in Zhanjiang, China.

Awarded by Bureau Veritas, the ISO 14021 certification validates SGD Pharma’s advanced sustainable manufacturing capabilities and supports global brands in meeting rigorous environmental standards.

PCR glass manufacturing is integral to SGD Pharma’s global decarbonisation strategy, which targets a 42% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions and a 25% cut in Scope 3 emissions by 2030.

The use of PCR glass directly contributes to this goal: according to the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE), every 10% increase in recycled cullet reduces energy use by 3% and CO₂ emissions by 5%.

The certification confirms that SGD Pharma’s Zhanjiang plant uses between 18% to 35% PCR content, measured in line with FEVE’s calculation standards.

Frédéric Barbier, Asia Pacific General Manager at SGD Pharma, said: “This certification is more than a milestone; it’s a testament to our commitment to lead the sustainable transition in glass packaging for cosmetics.

“By overcoming local supply chain constraints in securing high-quality PCR cullet in China, we are providing our partners with a certified, low-carbon solution that aligns with international norms.”

A major hurdle in PCR glass production in China is the sourcing of high-quality, compliant post-consumer glass cullet.

To solve this, SGD Pharma has established a rigorous, traceable sourcing and testing protocol across China to ensure consistency and full traceability for all its PCR production.

With rising regulatory pressure and a greater expectation from consumers for sustainable packaging, beauty brands are seeking verified circular solutions.

SGD Pharma said certified PCR glass packaging provided a reliable and transparent way for its partners to reduce their environmental footprint while advancing towards a circular economy.
