The Society of Glass Technology (SGT) highlights the sustainability sessions from its 2025 Annual Conference.
The event will take place from 1–3 September at the Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, UK.
The conference will focus on three main areas: sustainability, science, and heritage and history.
The presentations will be given by representatives from both the industry and academia.
On Day One, Gabrielle Gaustad, of Alfred University, will hold the N. L. Varshneya Memorial Lecture on ‘Glass sustainability: challenges and opportunities at end of life’.
Other sustainability highlights include:
Day One:
- Cullet, glass fibres, etc, Gareth Morris, Saint Gobain
- Challenges and progress in recycling of specialty glass and glass-ceramics, Jörn Besinger, Schott
- Overview of CO2 capture systems with hot potassium carbonate (HPC) applied to glass furnaces, Giorgio di Lascio, K2-CO2
- How has our industry evolved over the last year, Steve Whettingsteel, Krysteline Technologies

A Banquet Dinner will also be held on Day Two at Magdalene College, Cambridge, after the sessions.
On Day Three, the focus will shift to the heritage and history of the glass industry, as well as the ‘Unlocking the mysteries of glass’ course.
The session will be run by former SGT President Professor Arun Varshneya from 9am to 5pm.
The course is ideal for recent professionals in glass related industries with little or no formal background in glass as well as students.
