LG Electronics has become a member of Glass Futures, a UK-based not-for-profit organisation which focuses on glass research and development, innovation and training.

The President of the Republic of Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, visited the United Kingdom last week as guest of His Majesty King Charles III to launch negotiations on an upgraded, modern free trade agreement to boost trade between the two countries.

President Yoon Suk Yeol attended the UK-Korea Business Forum at Mansion House, London on 22nd November, which saw Korean businesses back Britain with £21 billion of investment.

Investment in green energy and infrastructure projects across the UK, creating more than 1,500 jobs, included LG Electronics and Glass Futures.

Youngseok Kim, Business Leader of Advanced Materials at LG Electronics said: “Glass is everywhere in our lives, and we believe it is our duty to collaborate and find innovative solutions to manufacture glass in the most sustainable way.

“LG Electronics is interested in exploring advanced technologies for glass production such as electric or hydrogen powered furnaces, as well as increasing the proportion of recycled content to make new products.”

Earlier this year, a trade mission took place to the Republic of Korea with Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCR CA).

As part of the UK-Republic of Korea Innovation Twins Programme, The British Embassy introduced Glass Futures to LG Electronics, a manufacturer of consumer electronics and home goods, as one of many partnerships supported by LCR CA.

After technical discussions, LG Electronics became members of the not-for-profit research and technology organisation to benefit from its technical expertise.

Glass Futures’ £54m government funded Global Centre of Excellence in St Helens will allow industry to trial and demonstrate technologies and generate ideas that will support the glass and foundation industries to decarbonise and become more sustainable, faster.

Chief Executive at Glass Futures, Richard Katz said: “We’re delighted to welcome LG Electronics to Glass Futures’ membership alongside many world leading corporations, particularly at the time of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s State Visit to the UK to celebrate our two nations building on our complementary strengths in innovation toward Net Zero.”

LG Electronics is also looking to expand its EasyClean enamel coating technology by working in collaboration with Glass Futures.
