Sustainable glassmaking and managing glass recovery were among the subjects during a session focused on industry at this week's 15th European Society of Glass (ESG) Conference.

The Sustainability Session was titled The Journey from Pollution to Prosperity and focused on strategies for increasing recovery and utilising more glass, as well as collaboration between industry and academia.

The two-day session began with the NL Varshneya Memorial Lecture which was given by Steve Whettingsteel of the UK's Krysteline Technologies, and was titled A closer look at sustainable glass recycling.

Afterwards he was presented with an award by Society of Glass Technology President, Prof Arun Varshneya.

A further 14 papers were then delivered by professionals from industry and academia. These included from glass manufacturers AGC and Sisecam, glass suppliers such as Picvisa, SEFPRO and FIC UK, and consultancies including Arup and Solar Recycling Solutions.

The ESG is taking place all week at Cambridge University, UK alongside the 15th International Conference on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials and the Annual Conference of the Society of Glass Technology.

The event included a conference banquet with O-I Glass's Ludovic Valette as the guest speaker.

The week started with a presentation by invited guest Edgar Dutra Zanotto, Department of Materials Engineering, Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil.

This was followed by the Michael Cable Memorial Lecture delivered by Manoj Choudhary, Adjunct Professor of Materials Science & Engineering, the Ohio State University, on Monday, who discussed the Progress and challenges in decarbonisation of industrial glass melting.

Prof Choudhary was afterwards presented with an award by Prof Paul Bingham (pictured below).

It also included the Pilkington Award 2022 presentation to Dr Laura Adlington presented by Dr Emma Barney (pictured).

The conference continues until Friday this week.
