About 130 tonnes of molten glass spilled from a tank break at a US manfacturing plant.
More than 50 firefighters were called to the Anchor Glass Container site in Salem, New Jersey on Thursday this week after the 200 tonne tank ruptured.
No one was injured in the incident.
Robert Etherton Jr., engineering services manager at Anchor Glass said the fire broke out when a hole formed in a tank filled with molten glass, causing the glass to pour into a containment area and onto the plant’s floor.
“There was a small hole in the side of one the furnaces,” said Etherton. “It was in a tough area to reach, which made it hard to get under control.”
He added damage was also done to equipment surrounding the tank, which will be repaired within the next few days.
“The hot glass caused some fires and damaged some of the surrounding equipment,” said Etherton. “We’ll be making repairs to the damaged equipment over the next few days.”
About 55 firefighters responded to Anchor Glass to assist with the tank break, as well as ambulances and emergency responders.
