Verallia UK is consulting on 40 proposed job cuts at its Leeds and Knottingley factories.

The GMB trade union said the decision had been influenced in part by the impact of the UK Government’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme.

Verallia UK confirmed it would start-up its newly rebuilt L1 furnace in Leeds while ceasing operation of the ageing furnace at its Knottingley site.

As a result of this restructuring, approximately 40 redundancies could be made.

Consultations are currently underway with employees and their representatives at the Knottingley plant to explore options to mitigate job losses.

Around 25 redeployment opportunities are available across the company’s sites in Knottingley, Leeds, and Castleford.

In a statement, Verallia UK said the changes would enable it to consolidate production onto more modern equipment and enhance the competitiveness of UK glass manufacturing.

The company added that it was committed to supporting affected employees with respect and fairness throughout the consultation process.
