The Vetropack Group will discontinue its glass recycling operations at its St-Prex site in Switzerland by the end of February 2026.
After the closure of the glass production facility last year, cullet processing was continued as a transitional service for around 30 municipal partners in the region.
Vetropack said the discontinuation of cullet processing was the concluding step in closing the St-Prex site.
It continued that without a directly connected glass production facility, continuing to operate the cullet plant was no longer a viable option, either economically or ecologically.
Johann Reiter, CEO of the Vetropack Group, said: “Although we're discontinuing cullet processing in St-Prex, we remain committed to glass recycling in Switzerland.
“We will soon be presenting our municipal partners with concrete alternatives for their future glass recycling via some of our long-standing partner companies.
“Of course, each municipality will be free to either choose this solution or find its own solution.
"Our goal, however, remains to ensure a smooth transition.”
Currently, Vetropack's processed cullet is being transported to other European plants for further processing, which the company believes is not a sustainable long-term solution.
Therefore, cullet processing in St-Prex will be discontinued as of 28 February 2026.
Employees whose fixed-term contracts had been extended for the transition phase have been informed that their employment will end by the end of February.
A small team will then remove the remaining used glass during the months after.
